New on SI: Fantasy Riser: D’Andre Swift’s Discount in Detroit Won’t Last Long

One of the top backs in college in 2019, D’Andre Swift has high expectations in Year 1 with the Detroit Lions. SI Fantasy analyst Matt De Lima says even with a timeshare in the backfield, Swift could rise up draft boards quickly. The premium on running backs has nearly returned to the good old days when selecting two running backs in the first two rounds was a very common draft strategy. This is way back when PPR scoring was just coming into its infancy. We haven’t quite reached those levels, but we’re not far off. The unknown promise of a rookie has also never seemed to tempt drafters more so than now. As evidence, just look at the average draft position of players like Clyde Edwards-Helaire (28, RB15), Jonathan Taylor (48, RB22) and Cam Akers (67, RB29). The third rookie RB coming off the PPR draft boards is the one I want to focus on. Coming into the league, he was often cited as one of the best rookie backs, just going off pure talent. He’s sunk a tiny bit because of his situat...

New on SI: 2020 Detroit Lions Team Outlook: Can Matthew Stafford Fuel a Franchise Turnaround?

It's been 27 years since the Detroit Lions won a division title. Fantasy owners would be happy with a full, healthy season after 2019's offensive disaster. Coaching Staff The lifeline of Matt Patricia holding the head coaching job for the Lions long-term hinges on his success this year. Over his first two seasons with Detroit , he went 9-22-1 , which came after Jim Caldwell went 36-28 over four years as the head coach. Patricia worked in New England’s system since 2004, helping them win three Super Bowls. He held the defensive coordinator job for the Patriots from 2012 to 2017. The Lions brought in Darrell Bevell to run the offense in 2019 after spending the last 12 seasons with the Vikings and the Seahawks as the offensive coordinator. He helped Seattle win one Super Bowl (2013). Bevell has 20 years of experience in the NFL. Detroit finished 18th in points scored (341) and 17th in offensive yards. Cory Undlin takes over the defense after coaching the defensive back for...

New on SI: How Many Receiving Yards Will Kenny Golladay Have in 2020?

What type of production should sports bettors anticipate from Detroit Lions WR Kenny Golladay in 2020? SI Gambling analyst Frankie Taddeo breaks down the sportsbooks' projected totals and reveals whether he’s going “over” or “under.” Detroit Lions wide receiver Kenny Golladay has surpassed the 1,000-yard receiving mark the past two seasons and has firmly entrenched himself as an elite wide receiver in the NFL. The former Northern Illinois standout has become the top target of quarterback Matthew Stafford, with the two establishing themselves as one the league’s top offensive duos. Golladay had four games with 23-plus PPR (points-per-reception) points with Stafford under center, while his production dipped to just one contest with more than 18 PPR points with the Stafford on the sidelines. If Stafford can stay healthy, Golladay should produce strong WR1 numbers once again in 2020. The fourth-year wideout put up elite WR1 numbers in Weeks 6-9 with three 100-yard-plus receiv...

New on SI: Need-to-Know Strategies From My 14-Team FSGA Experts League Draft

A 14-team draft presents new, fun challenges for those who mostly play in 10 or 12 team leagues. These are this year's lessons learned from SI Fantasy expert Dr. Roto. Last Friday, I had my first fantasy football draft of the 2020 season. It was a 14-team league filled with 13 other industry experts. Here is the draft board: I'm psyched to have Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill as my top two picks. Tucker D. Franklin from Arrowhead Report recently detailed a very high receiving yards over/under total set by oddsmakers: Oddsmakers at DraftKings Sportsbook place Hill’s receiving yards over/under at 1,150.5 yards. Hill has surpassed the 1,150-yard mark in two of the last three seasons, but an injury in 2019 kept him from breaking 1,000 yards. Hill’s total is the sixth-highest projection among receivers. Only Michael Thomas, Julio Jones, Chris Godwin, DeAndre Hopkins and Mike Evans are all projected to haul in more yards than Hill. I wanted to give you some things that I learn...

New on SI: Detroit Lions Fantasy Team Preview

Sports Illustrated’s fantasy football analyst Frank Taddeo and AllLions editor John Maakaron discuss the Lions offensive playmakers A healthy Matthew Stafford in 2020 bodes well for the Lions passing attack. When Matthew Stafford went down with a season ending injury in Week 8, the Lions passing attack had an immense decline. But now that the Detroit quarterback is healthy into the 2020 season, fantasy football players are taking notice of the loaded offensive weapons at Stafford’s disposal. According to the latest Average Draft Position data, wide receivers Kenny Golladay is being drafted as a Top 10 wide receiver and the 25th overall player in the PPR format. Fellow receiver Marvin Jones is coming off draft boards as the 37th receiver while second year tight end T.J. Hockenson is drafted as the 14th tight end. Meanwhile, Stafford is narrowly being picked outside QB1 territory, with an overall ADP of 106. Sports Illustrated’s fantasy football analyst Frank Taddeo and AllLions edit...

New on SI: NFL Rumors: Buccaneers Not Interested in Signing Antonio Brown

Keep up with the latest news and rumors around the NFL. Tom Brady and Antonio Brown played one game together as Patriots teammates last season, and it doesn't look like they'll be reuniting in Tampa Bay. After rumors surfaced Tuesday that the Buccaneers might be interested in Brown, ESPN's Dianna Russini reported the team is not looking at the free-agent wide receiver.  The news doesn't come as a shock after Bucs coach Bruce Arians said in 2019 that he's not a fan of the changes he's seen in Brown over the years. During Arians's tenure as the Steelers' offensive coordinator, the team selected Brown in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft.  "There's too much miscommunication," Arians said. "Too much diva. I've heard so many stories. I like Antonio. He plays as hard as anybody on Sunday and he practices hard. He's just gotta make better decisions off the field, be on time, do some of those little things." Brown miss...

New on SI: How Has Cam Newton's Signing With the Patriots Impacted the NFL?

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is now a member of the New England Patriots. SI's Conor Orr details why Newton's decision to join the Pats is significant and how it benefits the player and the organization. Cam Newton's decision to sign with the New England Patriots has been one of the biggest stories in the NFL offseason. SI's Conor Orr details the move and why it made sense for both Cam and the Pats to join forces this season.

New on SI: Ron Rivera: Cam Newton 'Ready to Bust Out' with Patriots

Ron Rivera says Cam Newton will thrive in New England now that the quarterback seems healthy again. Washington head coach Ron Rivera believes Cam Newton is poised to thrive with the Patriots.  Rivera, who coached Newton for nine seasons in Carolina before he was fired last December, says he believes the quarterback seems fully healthy based on workout footage.  "He's headed in the right direction," Rivera said on the McNeil & Parkins Show on 670 The Score on Monday . "I mean, he's probably about as healthy as it gets from what I've seen on video. I think he's ready to bust out. "I would never bet against the young man, that's for sure." ESPN reported Sunday that Newton signed a one-year contract with the Patriots, who were looking for a new quarterback after Tom Brady departed for the Buccaneers in free agency. The Panthers released Newton in March. The quarterback had one year remaining on the $100 million contract extension he s...

New on SI: Analyzing Cam Newton to New England: Winners and Losers

In some ways, we're all winners. But in other ways, there are certain people who can be much happier about the former MVP joining in the Patriots. The real winner here is all of us. No longer will watching the Patriots win be a twinge uncomfortable, the players nervously milling about the post-game festivities like the psychologically tortured children of overcompetitive Texas high school football parents. Cam Newton is fun. He’ll wear great hats. He’ll probably do good impressions of Bill Belichick, just like he did Norv Turner . Have you ever seen parents around their grandchildren for the first time and wondered where these affable, jovial people came from? This is Belichick’s twilight phase. Newton is the carefree talisman of a new phase in life. But like every large-scale transaction in the NFL, there are two sides of the coin. Some people will benefit from the offseason’s most consequential move . Some people, most certainly, will not. Here is a list of said people as b...

New on SI: Draft or Pass: Will Bears RB David Montgomery Blossom in Year 2?

A promising rookie season has left SI Fantasy expert Ben Heisler wanting to see more of Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery. What does he have in store for fantasy owners in Year 2? It's never too early to start your fantasy football research, and we at SI Fantasy want to provide you with the best information possible heading into your drafts. Our "Draft or Pass" video series takes a closer look at a fantasy player that will be debated often leading up to fantasy drafts. Are our hosts targeting this player specifically? Are they avoiding him entirely? Today's video focuses on Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery. Draft or Pass at current ADP (average draft position): 56 (RB25) I’m still slowly recovering from the overdose of David Montgomery Kool-Aid that I endlessly consumed in the summer of 2019. The Bears were coming off a 12-4 season in which Mitchell Trubisky took a significant leap in Year 2. If not due to a 43-yard field goal somehow meticulousl...

New on SI: Could the 2011 Lockout Give Us One Hint Why The Patriots Wanted Cam Newton?

Does 2011 offer a hint about Bill Belichick's interest in Cam Newton? Plus, notes on the QB market, the Patriots' latest penalties, Colin Kaepernick's Netflix doc and Johnny Manziel's comments. Camp opens for most teams a month from yesterday. Or at least it’s supposed to. Here’s what we’ve got for you this afternoon. … • Someone who has worked in New England made a pretty interesting point to me about the Cam Newton signing , as it relates to Bill Belichick’s brand of logic. He told me that in 2011, Belichick told everyone that the one thing that would kill the team early on, post-lockout, was being out of shape, and giving up big plays as a result of it. This guy then said, regarding Newton, “So what better way to pressure on a tired defense than have Cam back there?” And then there’s this—if the Patriots feel like they needed to be a little simpler to play fast on offense, Newton can facilitate that in allowing New England to build more off its run game. Now, I ...

New on SI: 2020 Chicago Bears Team Outlook: Nick Foles or Mitch Trubisky?

Even in a down year, the Chicago Bears squeaked out an 8-8 record. In 2020, they could seek a new direction by putting Nick Foles in the huddle over former No. 1 pick Mitch Trubisky. Coaching Staff After a breakthrough season in 2018 (12-4), the Chicago Bears slipped to 8-8 last year because a fade offensively (29th in points scored – 280 and yards gained). They scored 141 fewer points than in 2018 (421). Chicago brought in Matt Nagy to be the head coach after a successful 2017 season as the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs. Nagy had ten seasons of NFL experience working under Andy Reid. He has a 20-12 record over two years as a head coach with one appearance in the playoffs. Bill Lazor takes over as the offensive coordinator after spending 2019 as an analyst for Penn State. He has four seasons of offensive coordinator experience. His NFL career started in 2003 while coaching in the league for 13 years. The Bears’ defense slipped to fourth in points allowed (298) and eighth...
