New on SI: Business of Football: College Conferences Return; Tyrod Taylor's Legal Case

While the business of football briefly took a back seat in college football, it won out in the end as usual. News moves fast in the business of football, as developments in this unprecedented and unique season amid COVID-19 continue. We begin with a stunning—although not surprising—reversal in college football. Big Ten business over all In August, the Big Ten surprisingly (to me) prioritized the health and safety of its players and staff over economics by opting not to play in 2020. The decision resonated as 1) other Power 5 conferences (the SEC, Big 12 and ACC) reached the opposite decision; and 2) the economic impact wreaked on these schools and surrounding regions is massive even without fans, as I detailed here at the time. It seemed that my adage “The business of football always wins” was proved wrong … until it was proved right again last week. The Big Ten reversed course; it will now play . With the Big Ten domino falling, others have followed in lockstep. The Pac 12, afte...

New on SI: Titans, Vikings Suspend In-Person Activities After Three Players Test Positive For COVID-19

The Titans and Vikings have suspended all in-person club activities after three Tennessee players and five personnel returned positive COVID-19 results. The Titans and Vikings have  suspended all in-person club activities  after three Tennessee players and five personnel members returned positive COVID-19 test results, the NFL announced  on Tuesday.  Minnesota hosted the Titans in Week 3 and won 31–30 at U.S. Bank Stadium. As of Tuesday morning, the Vikings have not returned any positive COVID-19 tests but will shut down activities and the facility per NFL protocol, the team said in a statement .   Both teams are working closely with the league, the NFLPA and infectious disease experts to "evaluate close contacts, perform additional testing and monitor developments." Further decisions will be made with health and safety as the "primary" consideration.  According to ESPN's Dianna Russini , the Titans will not be allowed in their facility prior to ...

New on SI: How Is ESPN's New 'Monday Night Football' Booth Doing After Three Games?: TRAINA THOUGHTS

How are Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick faring after three games? 1 . After Week 1, I wrote that I didn't want to evaluate ESPN's new Monday Night Football booth until they called a few games together. Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick have now called a few games together, including a big one Monday night. My feelings on the crew haven't changed much over the three weeks. The trio is solid, not spectacular, and that's O.K. This booth is a big improvement over the MNF booth of the past few years. This crew doesn't distract from the game, their act doesn't seem forced and they give you a good broadcast. There's not much more you can ask for as a viewer. For example, this was an excellent call by Levy with good analysis by Riddick and Griese immediately after the touchdown. Same thing here. Levy is a good play-by-play caller. And Griese and Riddick are fine. What prevents this booth from being great isn't the fault of t...

New on SI: Patrick Mahomes Proves Lamar Jackson Is No Rival: Unchecked

Patrick Mahomes proved he has no peers in Monday Night Football showdown with Lamar Jackson. Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are not rivals because Mahomes has no peers. That’s not a knock on Jackson, who is a tremendous talent, though I would like to see him perform better in big games at some point, but instead a simple acknowledgement that the Kansas City Chiefs QB is just different. And after KC dispatched the Ravens on Monday Night Football, Mahomes improved to 3-0 in the head to head matchup while displaying some of the absolutely disgusting ability, en route to nearly 400 yards passing and five total TDs, that makes him the baddest man who has ever taken a snap from center. At least to me. Currently, Russell Wilson is the only guy I’d even entertain mentioning in the same breath as him . But when you’re looking for a true rival to Mahomes, I think you have to go past his contemporaries and straight to all-time greats, like the somehow still in action Tom B...

New on SI: Unchecked: Patrick Mahomes Has No Rival

Patrick Mahomes proved Lamar Jackson is no rival in the Chiefs win over the Ravens. The Kansas City Chiefs bested the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football and as a result, Patrick Mahomes is now 3-0 head to head against Lamar Jackson . Sports Illustrated host Robin Lundberg explains how Mahomes and Jackson are not really rivals, as to him Mahomes has no current peers and his true challenge will be history given his unprecedented trajectory.

New on SI: Patrick Mahomes Had Another Great Finger-Counting Message for His Doubters

Tenth in the draft. Fourth on the “NFL Top 100.” Stop selling Patrick Mahomes short. Count ’em Every game Patrick Mahomes plays makes his pre-NFL football career more unbelievable. How did this guy only receive scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Houston and Rice? How did he not win more awards in college? How did he slip to 10th in the draft? He isn’t afraid to let people know that he remembers the slights against him, either. When Mahomes and the Chiefs blew out Mitch Trubisky’s Bears in primetime on Sunday Night Football  last season, Mahomes celebrated a touchdown pass by counting to 10 on his fingers, a reference to Chicago picking Trubisky at No. 2 instead of him.  After a touchdown in Monday night’s win over the Ravens, Mahomes did something very similar.  So what does the number four symbolize here? This summer, Mahomes came in fourth on the NFL’s annual “ NFL Top 100 ” list, which is voted on by the players. Lamar Jackson was first. As Jackson turne...
