New on SI: Bold Predictions for Super Bowl LIV

Which quarterback will throw for more yards? Will Pitbull show up? Will Andy Reid coach in a Hawaiian shirt? Some bold predictions ahead of the Super Bowl. There’s just a few more days until the Chiefs and the 49ers kick off from Miami. The MMQB staff has made picks for winner, score and MVP , so all that’s left is some BOLD predictions. ALBERT BREER:  49ers DE Nick Bosa will have multiple sacks and be a menace in general for the Chiefs to deal with, and challenge Garoppolo for MVP honors in the stadium his dad once called home. There’s thinking out there that Patrick Mahomes will be able to use the Niners’ aggression up front against them, and I think that’ll be true to a degree. But Bosa’s the one of the team’s pass-rushers athletic, technically-sound and well-rounded enough to create heat while playing a disciplined game, and that’ll be a problem for Kansas City in scramble situations where Mahomes is at his best. ANDREW BRANDT:  The presumptive MVP of the game—Patrick...

New on SI: Baker Mayfield on Responding to Critics: 'I Put My Foot in My Mouth a Lot This Past Year'

Browns QB Baker Mayfield called 2019 a "humbling experience" after frequently responding to outside criticism. While addressing the Cleveland Browns ' struggles during the 2019 season, quarterback Baker Mayfield said he's moving on from responding to criticism. Mayfield appeared on ESPN's Get Up on Friday morning and buried his beef with former NFL head coach Rex Ryan. "It comes down to... doing my job the best I can and not worrying about the outside stuff. Not replying to you," he said while pointing to Ryan. "Not telling you that orange and brown don't matter. Just doing my job and doing what really matters being a quarterback." Mayfield and Ryan shared a laugh over his comments, which referenced an insult he hurled at the former coach last fall. After the Browns lost to the Rams in Week 3, Ryan called Mayfield "overrated as hell" on ESPN while criticizing his accuracy and speed. When reporters brought up Ryan's opin...

New on SI: The Madness of Super Bowl IV, and the Play—65 Toss Power Trap—That Defined It

For a game that featured a pre-game hot-air balloon mishap and a star quarterback embroiled in a gambling scandal, the fact that a single play call—resulting in a five-yard touchdown—became the defining moment is a testament to the legacy of legendary Chiefs coach Hank Stram. MIAMI — He would think of these ideas while floating in the backyard pool. The kids would later joke, lovingly, that Hank Stram was coated in so much tanning goop that it looked like a small oil spill was encircling him there on the raft. But these sessions would end up producing some of the most important schematic advances in football history. The moving pocket. The I formation. Perplexing backfield motion. And, of course, the infamous 65 Toss Power Trap, which, until the Chiefs touched down at Super Bowl LIV this week here in Southern Florida, may have served as the single most memorable moment in franchise history. The play—a fake toss sweep coupled with an inside handoff to running back Mike Garrett at the...

Spicy chicken wings leave J.J. Watt with tears in his eyes 1 . J.J. Watt and Jimmy Fallon took the Hot Ones challenge last night. New on SI: Joe Montana’s Super Bowl Q&A

The 49ers and Chiefs legend on his former teams and their young star quarterbacks, and why you won’t be seeing him at a championship parade no matter which team wins. The day after the conference championship games, Joe Montana posted on social media a photo of two framed jerseys in his house: On the left, a white No. 19 uniform from the last game he played in the NFL, with the Chiefs in 1994. On the right, a red No. 16 uniform from his final game for the 49ers, in 1992. “I GUARANTEE my team will win the SUPER Bowl!!” he wrote. Not quite as bold as Joe Namath’s guarantee … “I had a great time in both places,” says Montana, who won four Super Bowls over 14 seasons with the Niners, then played two years in Kansas City, making the playoffs both seasons. “I obviously spent more time in San Francisco, but when I got to Kansas City, it was so nice. Those can be tough transitions, but the neighbors, people, organization made it a great experience. It’s what you were hoping for, but not ex...
