New on SI: Matthew Stafford, Sean McVay Celebrated Rams Trade With Dinner in Mexico

Stafford and McVay celebrated Saturday's trade during a dinner with their wives in Los Cabos, Mexico, per The MMQB's Albert Breer. The Rams completed a trade with the Lions to acquire quarterback Matthew Stafford on Saturday, and it didn't exactly take long for Stafford to get acquainted with Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay.  Stafford and McVay reportedly had dinner together shortly after the trade was agreed to on Saturday, according to The MMQB's Albert Breer . As the NFL world reacted to a true blockbuster deal , the new Rams' duo reportedly enjoyed dinner with Stafford’s wife Kelly and McVay’s fiancée Veronika in Los Cabos, Mexico. It's likely Stafford and McVay will dive into some film together in the coming weeks, but on Saturday, more important matters awaited. "Once the deal was agreed to, some 1,100 miles south of L.A., McVay and Stafford were sitting down for dinner to celebrate a fresh start of their own," Breer wrote on Sunday night...

New on SI: MMQB: Inside the Trade Negotiations That Gave Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay What They Wanted

The first big offseason domino fell on the eve of a Super Bowl week. Here's how Matthew Stafford landed in L.A. and why he and his new coach are excited. It was 6:45 p.m. in Los Angeles, and 9:45 p.m. in Detroit when the Rams and Lions jumped on a six-way FaceTime call and, true to 2020 form (even if it is 2021), there were technical difficulties. L.A. inner-circlers Kevin Demoff, Les Snead and Tony Pastoors were apart and in their own separate boxes on the screen, while the Detroit brass of Rod Wood, Brad Holmes and Mike Disner were gathered in together in a meeting room on their phones. As you might imagine, the group setting on one end of Saturday night’s megadeal was causing consternation—via an annoying echo created by Lion voices showing up on each other’s phones—on the other end of the call. “Mute your mic!” said one of the guys in California. Appropriate, given the teams were about create the first mic-dropping moment of an offseason that’s coming with the promise of q...

New on SI: Are We Sure the Super Bowl Is a Good Way to Determine a Champion?

Welcome to an alternate reality where a kick drifted a little left, a coin landed tails, and your Super Bowl heroes are not who they were. The black chauffeured cars begin to arrive outside of NFL headquarters midtown Manhattan just before lunch on an overcast morning in early March. A banner hanging outside the main entrance welcoming Super Bowl champions of the past century does little to brighten the drab, corporate exterior of professional football’s nerve center, but it is bigger than in years past and it helps keep the older players shuffling around at the drop-off point from missing the front doors, as they had during previous reunions. Scott Norwood steps out of a warm Uber and is delighted to see Curt Knight up ahead. The former Washington kicker still looks good, every bit the man who could have played professional football or doubled as a Beatles impersonator. They often cling together at these things, as kickers tend to do. “There he is,” Norwood says, extending a left ...

New on SI: Matthew Stafford Is Better Than You Think—Now He Gets the Chance to Prove It

Matthew Stafford gave the Lions his best effort for a long time, but now he is free. Don’t be surprised when he makes the most of it. The Rams gave up a lot for Matthew Stafford , and the simple explanation is that he is one of the best players in the NFL. This was hard to see at times when he played for the Lions and the team kept losing, and it might be hard to see now. It will be obvious when he starts taking snaps in L.A, for Sean McVay and an organization that knows what it is doing. Stafford is a top-10 quarterback whenever he is healthy and top-five in the right situation. At some point in the next few years he will work his way into the MVP conversation. If you don’t believe me, listen to another MVP: “He’s a fantastic quarterback and has done it for a long time,” Aaron Rodgers said two years ago. “I have a ton of respect for him. He’s a hell of a tough guy. He’s played through some injuries and just watching him, I love the different arm angles that he can throw from. He’s ...

New on SI: Jared Goff on Reported Trade to Lions: 'I'm Just Excited to Be Somewhere That I Know Wants Me'

Jared Goff was reportedly traded to the Detroit Lions on Saturday night in a deal that sent Matthew Stafford to the Rams. Former No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff was reportedly traded to the Detroit Lions on Saturday night in a deal that sent the former Rams quarterback along with a third-round pick in 2021 and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 to the Detroit Lions. ESPN's Jeff Darlington said that Goff told him on Saturday night that he had already spoken to new Lions head coach Dan Campbell and several other members of the Lions' coaching staff. Per ESPN, the Lions view Goff as the starter moving forward. Last season, Goff threw for threw for 3,952 yards and 20 touchdowns with 13 interceptions and after making back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2017 and 2018, he struggled at times through Los Angeles's season. Goff missed just ...

New on SI: Rams Continue to Collect Star Power—But at What Cost?

In acquiring Matthew Stafford, Rams general manager Les Snead continued his quest to acquire as many stars as possible with little regard for depth or the future. Here’s how you can tell the Rams’ roster building strategy has crossed the line from entertaining and cheekily reckless to Wall Street Bets subreddit  levels of incomprehensible fearlessness: moments after Los Angeles swung a deal with the Detroit Lions for Matthew Stafford on Saturday night, which cost them Jared Goff, their third-round pick this year and their first-round picks for the following two seasons (they don’t have one this year), the immediate reaction was not a fever-dream vision of Stafford finally realizing his potential in an offense that can accentuate his all-field ball control and cannon arm. Instead, what surfaced was a genuinely concerned look at the infomercial-level reverse mortgaging the franchise has done to get themselves here. Under general manager Les Snead, the Rams picked in the first rou...

Detroit received several different offers for Staffo...

Deshaun Watson removed Texans references from his social media accounts as tensions rise between him and the franchise. A standoff is brewing between the Houston Texans and Deshaun Watson, and it doesn't look like the quarterback will be backing down. Watson removed the term “Texans” from his social media profiles as tensions rise between him and the franchise. There are still photos of him in Texans apparel, but he did change his main photo and took out the team affiliation in his bios. This comes after new general manager Nick Caserio made it clear in Friday's press conference that the franchise has "zero interest in trading" him . “I just want to reiterate our commitment to Deshaun Watson," Caserio said. "We have zero interest in trading the player. We have a great plan and vision for him. We look forward to spending more time with him." New Texans head coach David Culley reiterated this sentiment. New on SI: Report: J.J. Watt Might Have Played His Last Game With Texans

A few players and coaches have reportedly said Watt will not be returning to Houston next season. Houston Texans defensive J.J. Watt might have played his last game in a Texans' uniform. James Palmer of the NFL Network reported that a few players and coaches said Watt will not be returning to Houston next season. After the Texans 37–31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 27, Watt expressed his frustration with Houston. "We're professional athletes getting paid a whole lot of money, Watt said. "If you can't come in and put work in in the building and go out to the practice field and work hard, do your lifts and do what you're supposed to do, you should not be here." Watt, 31, is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He is due a $17.5 million non-guaranteed base salary in 2021. Watt has played with the Texans since the franchise selected him with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. In November, Watt told ESPN his thoughts about...

New on SI: NFL Rumors: Rams Exploring Possible Matthew Stafford Trade

Stafford, who turns 33 in February, is expected to be moved quickly, with the Lions hoping to trade him before the Super Bowl. As uncertainty looms over quarterback Jared Goff's future as the starter for the Rams , the team has looked into trade possibilities with the Lions about quarterback Matthew Stafford, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler . Fowler reports that Stafford considers the Rams a viable landing spot as a contender. It's unclear what would happen to Goff if a trade for Stafford gets completed, as Goff is due to make $43.25 million over the next two years and would be difficult to trade. The market for Stafford could move quickly, as The MMQB's Albert Breer reports that the Lions aim to complete a deal before the Super Bowl . Breer expects the Lions to receive a first-round pick and perhaps more for Stafford, which further complicates the situation for the Rams, as they do not have a first-round pick in 2021 draft. Stafford, who turns 33 on Super Bowl S...
